Rugged Point

Reaching the small settlement of the Kyuquot First Nation on the wild coast of Northwestern Vancouver Island feels like traveling to the end of the world. It’s accessible only by driving north one hundred miles past the last town on the main highway, then down a bumpy logging road for more than an hour, and finally taking a forty-five-minute boat ride. In this remote wilderness, a few hundred survivors of the once-thriving Indigenous nation have been quietly rebuilding their community and their culture which was ravaged by colonial conquest, the brutal residential school system, and the decimation of their once magnificent forests.
