A 6-part documentary series that takes audiences on a cultural, environmental and scientific journey down the Rupert River, on the last summer before it’s diverted for a major hydroelectric project.

The river’s story – its people, land and wildlife, and the construction now changing it forever -- is seen through the eyes of Ernest Webb, a Cree who witnessed the creation of Quebec’s first James Bay hydro project in his community of Chisasibi, thirty years before. 

As Ernest discovers at Rupert River, things are different, this time. 

Once the Cree were united in their opposition to damming, but the culture’s changed today, with people now accepting hydro development in return for jobs and compensation. Hydro-Québec, the province’s state owned utility, is making an effort to mitigate the environmental impact, something they didn’t do in previous projects. The animals and fish will adapt, the Cree are told. 

The Cree have much to gain, at least economically, in the short term. But what are the people of the north losing long term? What will happen to a culture that has to re-write its identity in one generation? What will happen to the environment, when the river and all it touches is changed forever?
