Tundra and Taiga transports audiences deep into the vast Canadian wilderness in remote regions across the country, from BC to the tundra of Québec and the north of Labrador. From hunting and fishing, to setting traps and foraging, the series offers an intimate glimpse into a way of life that is on the brink of being lost forever.

Less than one lifespan ago, there were still thousands of families across Canada whose fate was tied directly to hunting animals and the land they inhabited. Less than fifty years later, few families live completely off the land. Jobs, mortgages and busy modern life have gotten in the way. In James Bay Cree territory for instance, the last generation of elders who lived entirely off the land are now passing away. Their children, in their 70s, still go on the land for long stretches of time, but only by themselves. Their children and grandchildren can’t join them. They only get out to the bush for official hunting holidays like Goose Break. It’s a Catch 22. Even if you can arrange to get your children out of school, the cost of going out to remote regions for weeks or months at a time has made living in the bush a luxury. You need a good job to afford getting out there – but modern jobs won’t allow for such long holidays.

In Tundra and Taiga audiences are invited into the private lives of three indigenous families who are determined to make living off the land a central part of their lives. Despite their university degrees and their jobs, the heads of these families venture into the bush for long stretches every chance they get. There, they find meaning and solace as they reconnect to each other, to the land and to a traditional way of life that enriches all those lucky enough to experience it.

Unlike trophy or sports hunting, Tundra and Taiga focuses on traditional approaches to hunting, trapping, foraging, medicines, tools, clothing and hide-making according to different customs and traditions of the Gitxsan, Inuit and Cree Nations.
