Imaginative Beans dreams of becoming an architect so she can design the grand skyscrapers her people are famous for building. But when she enters high school on the rez, she soon discovers that this is no place for dreams. Chaos abounds in the classrooms where kids don’t see the point of school and couldn’t care less about what their non-Native teachers have to say. The most important thing is fitting in and living up to the tough Mohawk image.

After eager, gentle Beans gets beaten up by the biggest bully in her class for being different, Beans makes the bold decision to transfer to the “White School” off the reserve - even though her best friend Mackenzie calls it enemy territory – to get the education she needs to make her dreams come alive.

The private Catholic school in the big city is the complete opposite of the rowdy rez school in every way. But while the students might be better behaved in class, Beans finds herself in the middle of another minefield - bubbly rich girls, judgmental stares, condescending teachers and ignorant stereotypes that brand her as a baby-maker and a drain on the system. And it starts to eat away at her self-confidence and her dreams.

At home, things are no better. Many of her friends and community think she’s a snob and a traitor for going to the white school and even her dad wants her to give up on her dream for her own good. Beans can’t withstand the pressure and resigns herself to what everyone expects her to be. She slacks off at school, starts to party, and gives up on her dream.

But when a model-building competition is announced at school, it sparks the last smoldering embers of her ambition. With the help of her mother - who had given up her own dreams - and offbeat new friend Savannah, Beans enters the competition and to everyone’s surprise, ends up winning a prize.

Beans fights the outside world and her own people and shows them that your destiny is not predetermined by others’ expectations, but by the choices you make.
