First off, we’d like to thank everyone who came out to support Rezolution Pictures and all who were involved in the making of Smoke Traders.

The night started out with some good food and even better company! Smoke Traders director Jeff Dorn; editor Howard Goldberg; the smoke traders: Robbie Dickson and family, Tim Montour and friends, and Brian White; our broadcasters from TVO Jane Jankovic and Linda Fong; Franchesca Accineli of Telefilm;  Smoke Trader’s editor Howard Goldberg; special guest and guitar legend Stevie Salas as well as superstar drummer Tom Stephens, formerly of the Jeff Healey Band, were among the great group of people who joined us for dinner and drinks at Kit Kat.

From there, we headed over to Hot Docs for the sold-out world premiere of Smoke Traders at the TIFF Bell Lightbox Theatre. The anticipation from us and the audience could have been cut with a knife and what we heard when the house lights came back up, was music to our ears. Applause and tons of it! Seeing the work of a great team come to fruition is always such a wonderful experience.

Director Jeff Dorn was joined onstage by smoke traders  Robbie Dickinson, Tim Montour, and Brian White for questions from the audience. At 11pm, long after the film had ended, we were still there engaging with the audience about our documentary! Laughs were shared and new friends were made.

Overall, we couldn’t have asked for a better night. Thank you so much to everyone who came out. Your positive energy and support is what makes this business fun and exciting!

Where there’s smokes, there’s fire!

The hottest documentary at this year’s Hot Docs will be Rezolution Pictures’ Smoke Traders, a documentary about the Mohawk Nation’s controversial involvement in the tobacco trade told from the native perspective.

Filmmakers Jeff Dorn and Catherine Bainbridge spent three years in the Mohawk communities learning about the Native tobacco trade and the charismatic people involved in this lucrative and dangerous business.

Smoke Traders follows Brian, a former tobacco runner from Akwesasne trying to go legit by starting a sustainable energy business, and Robbie, who runs a multi-million dollar federally licensed cigarette factory in Kahnawake.
Through their stories we learn the deadly price of illicit smuggling but
also the life affirming benefits.

This controversial trade that the Canadian government wants shut down
has allowed Mohawks to raise themselves and their community out of poverty,
but is it legitimate entrepreneurship and an exercising of traditional rights or a criminal activity that deserves jail time?
